/finplan:setup

Guided interview to set up your complete financial profile, accounts, and goals from scratch. Walks you through everything needed for projections.

Usage

Type /finplan:setup to begin the interview.

What It Does

The setup interview runs through four sections conversationally:

1. Personal Profile

Collects your basic information:

  • Date of birth (month and year)
  • Employment status
  • Annual pretax income
  • Marital status (and spouse info if married)
  • Zip code (for state tax estimates)
  • Dependents (count and ages)

2. Accounts

Walks through common account categories one at a time:

  • Retirement β€” 401(k), IRA, Roth IRA, etc.
  • Savings & checking β€” Liquid accounts
  • Investments β€” Taxable brokerage accounts
  • Tax-advantaged β€” HSA, 529 plans
  • Real estate β€” Property and mortgage

For each account, collects the type, balance, and investment allocation.

3. Goals

Suggests goals based on your profile and walks through setup for each:

  • Emergency fund β€” 3–6 months of expenses
  • Retirement β€” Target age and desired spending
  • Education β€” One per dependent, if applicable
  • Home down payment β€” If you don't own a home
  • Major purchases β€” Vehicle, renovation, wedding, etc.

Links each goal to the accounts that fund it and shows required monthly contributions.

4. Wrap-up

Displays a comprehensive summary of your profile, accounts, and goals, checks whether total monthly contributions are realistic given your income, and suggests next steps.

Prerequisites

None β€” this command creates your state file from scratch. If a state file already exists, you'll be offered the choice to start fresh or switch to /finplan:checkup for updates.
